The Paranormal: What is it really?

We call it paranormal…but what is it really?

I have had people ask me this question time and time again and I have to admit, I find it difficult to answer. It’s easy to fall back on the standard definition of the word…some thing or event that is above or beyond normal, but that simply does not cut it and explains nothing. There are so many sub categories under the umbrella of paranormal, that to just ask what the paranormal is can be impossible to answer. Are you asking about ghosts, hauntings, cryptids, aliens, psychic abilities, NDE’s…what? There is no one way to explain a thing that is fundamentally unexplainable.

I have been immersed in the world of the mysterious, ghostly, unknown and paranormal for as long as I can remember. As a child it was books and more books of haunting tales and then came the movies in my teen years and all through these years I had experienced things I absolutely knew were not what the general public thought of as normal. As a result, a lot of what I experienced I kept to myself knowing it would not be taken seriously. As I grew into adulthood the experiences continued as did the reading and such until finally in 2009 I decided to get serious about paranormal research after investigating a friend’s apartment that was extremely active with para events. The place was amazing and it sealed my future as a researcher and investigator.

That brings us back to the question, what is the paranormal really? Well, it’s a matter of perspective. People have been researching the paranormal since time immemorial and we are no closer today to a solid answer. Whether you are using a notebook and pencil and possibly a voice recorder or a Mr. or Mrs. Gadget who goes in with all the latest ghost hunting tools, you are no closer to discovering what people have been searching for since forever. It boils down to this: if you are a believer in the paranormal and know without a doubt that it is real, then it is normal but just not satisfactorily explained but if you are a non believer then nothing anyone tells or shows you will ever convince you of the reality of paranormal experiences or events. It’s all about your perspective.

We really know nothing concrete about the why and how of it all, only that these things happen and have been happening for eons. Since we can’t seem to come up with anything that describes the paranormal conclusively then I say we are not supposed to know. If we really knew what the dynamics of various forms of “paranormal” were, then there would be no need for or desire to research it. Paranormal, supernatural, anomalous, fringe and other words are just poor blanket terms for things we really don’t understand and probably never will…at least not in this lifetime. The best we can do is to just keep forging ahead and learning as much as possible about what we know to be true but have no sure fire way of explaining.

Update and Some Paranormalogistically Related Thoughts

It has been a while since I actually wrote anything for this blog except for reposting a few excellent pieces from fellow bloggers. However, I have had some things rolling around in my head for a while and if I don’t get some of it out, my head may explode. My other life…maintaining a country property, flower and vegetable gardens, and some chronic health conditions, have kept me continuously fatigued and in no way eager to do any kind of writing. I do have a few things I’m working on and will post those here when they are ready. I do expect to keep on reblogging interesting and well-written articles. I do this daily in other social media outlets and see no reason not to share what I can here as well. I entirely believe in spreading the word and as it goes, I read voraciously every time I get a break. In fact, I escape into the paranormal, universal and quantum sciences as a way to unwind, relax and enjoy myself and as a reward for working through another tiring and painful day. A couple of things I want to say here have just been bugging me for a while and are not so much rants as a heads up. So here goes.

PhilosophersDesk

Do NOT buy used paranormal investigation equipment. I don’t care if you know the people who are selling it and trust them completely. Used equipment has been over used, abused, hooked, unhooked and put away wet time after time. By the time you get this stuff you can look forward to a dvr hard drive crash, batteries that won’t hold a charge, and others errors and break downs due to the rough road these electronics have already traveled. You might have scored an incredible deal on that fully loaded dvr but let a hard drive go down or something fry the whole damn thing and you have the expense of fixing it at a ridiculous fee and it will end up costing as much or more as a new unit would have. Buy it new with a warranty and if it fails then you might have some way to get it fixed without it killing your wallet. In the mean time, take care of what you have folks. This stuff doesn’t come cheap and it really isn’t meant for the uses and reuses we put it through, so be gentle with your “ghost hunting” gadgets.

I do think I’m just about done using the word “afterlife”. I believe I’ll start going with “nextlife”. The word afterlife has been so over said and prostituted by the news media, television and internet and delcared gazillions of times by paranormal investigators, including myself. The word itself makes no real sense to those of us who believe in life after physical bodily death…and parallel dimensions, alternate timelines and multiple universes. It indicates that the afterlife is later in time, whereas, the nextlife indicates another life next to this one, anywhere in time and immediately adjacent to or beside this physical life. I mean to say that this life and the next life and the previous life and on and on…are all next to each other rather than one after another. Maybe the word has just grated on me long enough just like the above detested “ghost hunter” reference.

Spelling. I recently received a request on a favorite social media website and when I went to check their profile, I found a two line description with four spelling errors. I did not scroll down to look at anything else, I just left. This particular group didn’t impress me as being the brightest lightbulbs in the package. Now hey…I’ll like just about any para page you can throw at me but seriously. There really is no excuse for this laziness in communication. I’ve seen this sloppy spelling and grammar increase a great deal recently and I just don’t understand why. I know I take creative license a lot with punctuation, especially commas, but it doesn’t look like a first grader wrote it either. So if you are not 100 percent sure how to spell something, look it up. Same goes for proof reading your work before you put it out there. Find the typos and fix them. If you want to be taken seriously at the outset, you cannot write that you are “A paranormul teem with grate skil for finding yor gosts and helping yor famly. We do no chagre for are survises we are hear to help yoo.” Ok…that may be a bit over the top but not by much from what I’ve seen around the net lately. Have some respect for yourselves folks, educate your mind. If you ever find a misspelled word or typographical error in my work, please let me know. Poetry doesn’t count 😉

So… since it seems that I am getting a whole lot more reading done than writing, I would love it if you posted a link to your paranormalogistically related blog or website in the comment section below. I will get to it eventually and very often I find something I will repost all over the place so bring it on. You can find me on the social media links to the right of this post, and there you’ll find tons of articles and blog posts that you won’t find here. And if you would like to add to the thoughts above please feel free to say what’s on your mind.

Voices From Forever – There Is No Silence – X2 Book Review

I have read a bunch of books on the paranormal over my lifetime and expect to read many more. I plan to do more book reviews in the future but I wanted to break the ice with something great, a book that was top shelf , so to speak. With that in mind, I was compelled to choose these two  wonderful books by a fellow blogger and new friend, Randall Keller. Voices From Forever is about one man’s journey into electronic voice phenomena. Not since I read Sarah Estep’s Voices Of Eternity several years ago, have I been so inspired by one person’s quest into the unknown dynamics of the voices. Randall Keller is open, honest and very real in his experience and wisdom concerning E.V.P. When you pick this book up you will not want to put it down until you’ve read the last page…and then you’ll wish it hadn’t ended.

But…it hasn’t! Mr. Keller’s second book, There Is No Silence is a continuance of his incredible journey into the world of spirit voices. This book is just as intriguing as the previous book if not more so. Mr. Keller does not presume to know it all and that is refreshing but I have to say I agree with his insights for the most part. His is a voice of experience and rings as true to me as anything I’ve read on the subject of spirit voices. I highly recommend you buy both of these books. They are not just for those of you who love E.V.P. but for all  paranormal researchers and to all of you who want to experience the voice of truth.

Find out more about Randall Keller and his work at http://www.randallkeller.com/ where you can hear his collection of E.V.P., listen to The Voices Podcast, purchase these awesome books and more. For more on this field of study you won’t want to miss his blog here at http://thevoicesblog.wordpress.com/.

What Was Your First Paranormal Experience?

Here it is.  I am curious to know what happened to you that created such a profound interest in the paranormal.  And with that, I’ll tell you why I’m here doing what I do.

Now, I’m not going to go into the very early years and the dreams and imaginary friend but am skipping to my first true paranormal experience several years ago when I was a teenager.

My father had very recently died of a massive heart attack at the tender age of 42.  He had been a coal miner all of his adult life and died suddenly one night coming out of the mines.  It was so sudden and threw me and my mom into a tailspin (understatement).  Shortly after this, me, my mom and my fiance were relaxing and talking one evening and heard my dad on the back porch.  He often came home from work and stomped his mining boots off on the back porch before he entered.  This night you could here this and him scratching at the door like he was trying to get his key in the lock. This happened about every 15 minutes for an hour.  There was snow on and we repeatedly checked the steps and there was no disturbance in the snow.

I don’t believe this was residual as it only happened this one night. Our happy life was bumping along just fine and he died suddenly.  I feel that my father just didn’t realize he was physically dead yet.  He was never much of a believer in the paranormal and scoffed at a lot of what we, as researchers, accept as fact.  There were a couple more experiences involving my father, with me and my mother, but I said FIRST paranormal experience so I’ll stop here.  I have had many experiences in many different situations since and just cannot resist trying to learn as much as I can about what we are, at the present, calling paranormal.

Join me now in recalling what got you started in this fascinating field of study.  Understanding what brought us to this point may help us understand where we are going.  I realize some of you may not be comfortable telling your story but your comments are certainly welcome.

Did That Just Happen?

Ghosts, spirits, entities, supernatural, paranormal, xenonormal…belief in a paranormal event plays an important role in how we interpret the reality of the event. A believer will be more likely to think an anomolous event to be paranormal. A skeptic will always have an excuse no matter how outrageous or uninformed. Belief plays a large part in what each one of us interprets as a paranormal event whether that be ghostly apparitions to U.F.O. sightings. But if you are truly interested in this field of study your personal beliefs cannot rule the show, and I’m including you hard-headed skeptics here. If you are serious about finding the truth,  you have to learn everything you can. Read, experiment, investigate, learn from people who have experience in the field and read and experiment and investigate some more.

If you learn all you can about your subject of interest, then you don’t go off reinventing the wheel so to speak. This applies to any field of endeavor. When you can get a grasp on what is already known, only then can you approach “objectively” what is unknown. I put quotes around that because a large part of the scientific community looks at paranormal happenings as subjective. More or less meaning that the phenomena can’t be proved by science by repeat performances inside some sterile, closed lab because experiences are in the observers head (and science hasn’t figured out how to bottle a spirit). The majority are not even sure consciousness exists. Of course, we who know the truth know a true skeptic will never believe in a ghost even if one ran him over.

I am a believer in paranormal phenomena and life after death because I’ve had many experiences and a few years of research and investigation under my belt, but my research is taking me into related fields such as psychology (psychologists who believe in paranormal phenomena are few and far between it seems), parapsychology, history, social sciences, electric and magnetic fields, weather systems, low frequency sound, cosmology, astronomy, a variety of quantum theories and most recently mind science and the list could go on.

So all I’m saying is keep an open mind, stay up to date on what’s new in the field as well as what has been learned by people who have been there and done that. Don’t be afraid to drop a belief that has been proven wrong. Explore topics on the human condition. That’s what we’re talking about here when we say ghost or spirit, is the human condition, in different condition than when it was in a living body here on Earth. Be aware of yourself in your reactions to anomolous events and make sure you don’t let your beliefs influence your findings. Above all keep searching for answers with integrity and respect and clear-minded thinking. We are all part of the learning process so let us keep our evidence of the paranormal unbiased, pure and thoroughly researched.

Belief, Intent & Pattern Recognition or the “Lanier Effect”

What does belief and intent have to do with pattern recognition?  Well, first a couple of odd words: Pareidolia and Apophenia. Both, in broad definition, essentially mean that when you see shapes in clouds or hear voices in traffic passing by (this doppler effect happens as sound waves are compressed in front of the car (high pitched) and stretched behind the car (low pitched) or see faces in dust orbs, your brain is seeking to make something recognizable out of the chaotic.  One short definition I found for the latter is: unmotivated seeing of connections.

The “Lanier Effect” has to be credited to George Foy who wrote the great sci-fi thriller novel “The Shift”. Now, Jaron Lanier is the pioneer of virtual reality and coined the term. In the book the Lanier Effect refers to a time shift lag in a virtual reality program. It is a trick of perception where the brain fills in the spaces where the program is not keeping up.

The brain knows what’s up and gives you what you believe in. And that is where belief and intent come into the picture.

Take the Oiuja board, tarot, automatic writing, dowsing; any of the diviniatory arts are based on intent. The board, the cards, the pendulum are simply tools to focus the intent of the person or medium using them. By the way, I believe we are all mediums in the sense that all sensory and extrasensory perception exists because of the human condition. So if you have a long standing belief in ghosts and you go to a location that has been reported as haunted intending to experience paranormal activity then you probably will. That banging is a water pipe, the light flickering is a loose bulb, the black apparition is the oak tree outside casting a shadow. But you intended to find a ghost and you believe they are there so despite zero evidence to the contrary you think maybe the spirits were just hiding. If you are listening to an EVP recording with the intent of finding voices something certainly will pop out at you and you will understand what it says even if no one else can. If you intend to see a face in an orb photo that has been blown up and pixilated out, then you will.

To try and put this in a human consciousness light, each and every one of us creates to some large extent our own reality. As such each sees or hears what is left after applying their personal filters and blinders. Naturally then not everyone who sees a rose will see beauty or think that gasoline smells terrible. Not everyone will relax to the sound of the rain and thunder or like the taste of chocolate cake. Once you run the input coming into your five regular senses then through your belief system and ego, the stimuli becomes unique to you alone. Five people riding in an elevator are experiencing five different realities.

And much if not all of our personal reality depends on what we want to see, hear, feel, etc. Intent. This from our beliefs and world view. But it can get complicated from there because some of these beliefs are probably not even your own. They may be your parents or teachers beliefs and you just accepted them as your reality. Say your parents spanked you when you were a child as a disciplinary action. You grew up and had children of your own and believed that this was the only way to control them despite what others may say or even a feeling within you telling you it is wrong. Your parent’s belief, not yours. Perhaps people alway told you the boogie man was just your imagination and there are no such things as ghosts. Thirty years later you are still skeptical of all things paranormal. Maybe you still hang on to family religious beliefs even though they have lost their luster for you.

I think elementary teachers along with parents have the greatest impact on children’s perceptions of the world around them. Very young children seem more receptive to true paranormal experiences as they do not have a solid belief system in place and their every intention is pure and spontaneous. Children are impressionable and beliefs taught as facts can certainly distort their reality. So before you were old enough to start middle school, already your perceptions are distorting because of other peoples ideologies.

Try examining some of the things you believe in and I’ll bet you come up with a bunch of stuff that you can’t even remember where you got it from. Beliefs you’ve never examined or tested against yourself because you just assumed they were true. Investigate those beliefs with the intention of dumping the ones that don’t hold water with you. You will clear up your personal reality and get rid of hang-ups.

Now you can look at paranormal activity much more objectively when trying to determine whether it is true activity or if something in our physical world is causing the disturbance. But the human mind is capable of much trickery so you need to be on your toes when investigating the unkown and going over evidence. Your mind WILL try to compensate for what it does not understand.

The brain is still the best computer out there, but like all computers, are outstanding at some tasks and damnably slow at processing others. And with that in mind, so to speak, can we train ourselves to recognize when our brain compensates or over-compensates for stimulus it has never encountered before? When it fills in the spaces, the pixels, the sound waves as a result of our intent and belief in the situation? Pretty easy to find a ghost if you really want to find a ghost. And the intent of most ghost hunters is to find a ghost.

Each one of us has a unique brain “program” or virtual reality system that accounts for why some people “see” and some don’t. But the operating system must be the same for there are accounts to numerous to list of hauntings and ghosts. I for one have seen and heard and experienced enough to make me a believer while letting the skeptic in me do the research and evidence review.

(End note)      During the first thought processes of this article I was doing an EVP recording where I was explaining to our friends on the other side what I was trying to get across in this article and got an outstanding Class A of one word, “Commission” in a loud male whisper. I didn’t take this to mean getting paid for the writing. After looking up some definitions I felt that it more meant: responsibility or charge, assignment, authority granted for a particular action or function, authority to act as agent for another or others, the power thus granted. I don’t know who this wonderful entity was but he strengthened my belief in the miracle of the other side and renewed my passion for life here on the Earth plane.

Paranormal Unity Starts With YOU

All I’ve been hearing lately is paranormal unity this and paranormal unity that.  But unless I’m missing something, I don’t see much of it going on.

How many of you paranormal teams and groups out there are actually teams? How many of you are really just two maybe three (if you’re lucky) like-minded souls. How many more of you are just one and you handle being Team Leader, Lead Investigator, Case manager, Tech, etc. and the evidence review?

Ok, so maybe you do have a reliable team together…well you have done good and I’m proud of you. But I know how getting them together with various work schedules and family obligations can be. And of course, quality not quantity matters when choosing likely team members….but sometimes you find out they were not as quality as you would have liked. Or maybe one of them turned on you, stole from you, lied to you. Then you had to terminated their team status as well as a friendship.

What I am saying is Paranormal Unity begins with you and your team. If your team is not on the same page as you then you don’t have a team. If they are not reliable or are more scared of evidence review than ghosts then you don’t have a team.  If you cannot fully 100% trust your members then you don’t have a team. If you gotta almost beg them to learn what’s new in the paranormal field then you don’t have a team.

I have a few special friends here (social media) who have been more generous with their time than I would have ever expected from people I have never met face to face. They have seriously talked to me about paranormal things, helped with evidence review, collaborated on video work, made great banners, turned me on to superior sites and equipment and taught me things I didn’t know. There has been more input from these distant friends than some of my now ex-team members. Now the team members I had who actually worked it know who they are…you others also know who you are.

Paranormal Unity….is a distant dream unless you and your team are unified. Only then can global paranormal unity be possible. No offense to those of you who are trying. A big HELLO to those of you who are half asleep.

But I wonder how many of you will actually want to talk about this? After all who wants to admit they have lazy or unreliable team members? Who wants to admit they’ve had to dump one here and there for various reasons? Come on…bring it on!…UNITY people…you want Unity?!?!  You have to make it happen and not just sit there and wish for it! That’s right, I’m trying to stir you up! And I want to hear from you on this…I’m sick of seeing people get burned by their own team or other teams.

Paranormal Unity…you tell me what YOU think it means. I think it means it starts with you and your team…if you don’t have it there you might as well hang up your gear and forget it because if you can’t believe in your team neither will anyone else.

For those of you who want to join a team or start a team…if you are just in it for the thrill-seeking, just don’t bother. If you can’t even bring a dang camera to the table, again just don’t bother. I am as helpful as anybody you’ll ever meet in this field or anywhere else and very serious about my work. But once you cross me…well…we’re done. I’m not a hard-ass people but damn it bring something besides what you’ve learned on tv. You want your unity, you have it right here.

As always my friends, I appreciate any input, good, bad or ugly. I think we need to address this problem more fully instead of just complaining about our members or lack of cooperation in the field.

String Theory, Time and the Ghosts in the Ether

String theory is telling us we live in a multi-layered, multiple dimensional universe or universes. Between these layers, dimensions or membranes is what is called the space time foam. Scientifically detected bubbles in the ether. Is this where the voices and spirits and orbs travel?

These bubbles pop in and out of existence and can connect via wormholes. Can the entities, who seem to be of a pure energy, time travel through these wormholes? And sinces wormholes are unstable by nature, does it account for the “now you see it, now you don’t” effect or even mechanical or warped evps?

If you have ever experienced having a question answered before it was asked on a recording, you know that time cannot be the same between dimensions. Maybe the entities are not really reading our minds when this happens but rather connecting to one of these fragile wormholes in a different phase of time.

We as physical beings have not yet figured out how to travel a wormhole. Without getting into all the scientific jaron, a wormhole cannot be stabilized enough to support our mass or low vibration plus they are way too small. But spirits in their various manifestations are of a higher vibration and energy so seem well suited to traveling through dimensions and time.

My guess is that pure consciousness can go wherever it chooses. My experiences with astral travel seem to back this up. (More on that at a later date)

So if everything is relative and everything and everyone exists in the all-encompassing NOW and we are all one and we all connect in some way, why shouldn’t the spirits be able to travel through this space time foam? Will the scientific community  figure out that what has probably been there forever and what may always be there, is one of the gateways to the other side?

Or does it have something to do with the dark matter and dark energy in space that we can’t even see? We only know it is there because it has a detectable gravitational field.   Could it also expain a wide range of mediumistic abilities such as precognition, remote viewing, visions of past lives, ESP?

Let me get your thoughts on this. The nature of time has always intrigued me and a few of the questions I have always asked since childhood is: Where did it all REALLY begin? What was there before nothing? What really sparked that something that created universes and life? Does it really simply boil down to a chemical reaction?

I think science and the paranormal community will discover that the elusive nature of time and space is the doorway to the “unknown”. Will we live to see those advances? Maybe not but when we get to the other side perhaps then these questions won’t confound us as they do now.

Is Ghost Hunting Thinning The Veil Between Dimensions?

If you’ve been doing paranormal research seriously for any length of time then you have probably noticed that you are capturing more and better evidence as time passes.  Over time and serious investigation I believe you open a doorway or gateway to yourself as a means to an end for the spirits.  Communication or manifestation being the end result.  I think the entities have to be able to trust you to a certain point to put forth the energy needed to manifest. And your personal energy has a lot to do with that.  Why would they waste energy on someone who was just playing at ghost hunting or could not control their emotional fears and ran (run dude!) at the first creek of a floorboard or a shadow passing by?

Just think, ghost research has become so popular world wide and all these people are investigating and watching and listening very closely to what is going on around them–concentrating their energy to experience a paranormal occurance.  All this must create its’ own form of energy.  And if spirits need an energy source to manifest…well then…..

I think our persistance in exploring the field of survival after bodily death is thinning the veil between dimensions and other worlds.  And I’m not just talking about ghosts, I’m talking about ufo’s and aliens, bigfoot, mothman, residual and object hauntings, attachments, psychic phenomena in all it’s beautiful range. The list could go on.

My experience thus far leads me to believe I have definately been noticed by our friends on the other side and that I am gaining their trust in my pursuit of answers as well as trying to get it out there and let people know what I am finding and feeling.  In fact, it’s getting to the point where I can capture evp almost anytime I turn on my recorder, wherever I may be.  I’m not saying everywhere I go is haunted but that it doesn’t seem to matter where you are if you have established a link.  And if they (the entities) can read minds like I feel they can, then they know ahead of time when you are going to record, film, take pictures, whatever. If you’ve ever gotten an answer before you asked the question, you get what I’m saying about the mind-reading.  Of course this phenomenon may have something to do with the discoveries in string theory or more recently m-theory but I’ll not get into that here.

I’ve read and heard of others worrying over this, bothered by seemingly becoming noticed by our deceased friends.  I say, don’t worry…that’s what you’re doing this for right?  To establish some sort of communication?  To find out what’s going on, figure out how any of this is even possible?  You should feel good about yourself for gaining the trust of the spirit world and opening up mentally and emotionally to their communications. If you keep the positive and respectful personal energy flowing then you will be a successful paranormal investigator- that is, if you stick it out, open the portal and establish the link.

If you are capturing more and increasingly better evidence as you explore and research, then I believe you are helping to thin whatever is separating us from profound and skeptic-convincing discoveries.

But this is just what I know to be true from my perspective and is just one of my theories.

Now I want to know if you have experienced some of these things in your investigations of the unknown.
